I have a true passion for motorsports.
I can’t remember any time in my life when I haven’t been into cars and motorsports. One of my earliest memories is of my dad servicing the batteries in his MGB GT. I couldn’t grasp why you had to remove the rear seat and awkwardly climb back there to do the job. Twin six volt batteries no less. “Why did they put them there?” I asked. “They just did.” he replied. “Isn’t that dumb?” “Yes.” That moment ignited a life-long obsession with car design and the snowball started to form for everything automotive.
Growing up here in the US, in the late 70’s and 80’s, there was very little television coverage of racing. Instead, I had to wait a week (or month) to receive my subscriptions of Auto Week, Car and Driver and Road and Track, to get the results. I read everything I could lay my hands on pertaining to drivers, teams, cars, Formula One, car culture, etc … still do. I studied the photography, imagining that day: the intense focus and exhilaration, the sounds, the smell of race fuel and brakes, and the emotional highs of winning and losing. It was massively impactful. This led to drawing cars, a lot. Yes, I was that kid in class… not paying attention to the teacher.
My passion led me to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where I earned a degree in Automotive Design. This was the first time I met people just like me. Conversations about tires, how to re-jet Weber carbs and is Senna really great or a punk were had with guys that, over 30 years later, are still my best friends. Though I now design hotels and resorts, cars continue to be my advocation.
My artwork is a reflection of my childhood gateway into racing. Liveries are iconic. You can’t say “Gulf” or “Martini” without “Porsche”. I love how branded graphics compliment, and in many ways, help define the forms of a car to create a symbolic statement about a team, country and/or driver. I’m fascinated with racing legends and continuously seek to learn more personal stories about individual drivers, their cars and the teams that supported them.
I haven’t driven or owned many of the cars that have captured my imagination for 50+ years, let’s face it, few have. But I have had the good fortune of tapping into the community of car lovers whom share my zealot like enthusiasm for motorsports. Through my artwork, I seek to learn more stories, more histories, while I reflect an impression of motion, speed, focus and the joy of competition.
